Welcome to the Writing-PAD Centre Goldsmiths
'Writing Between the Disciplines: A celebration of writing at Goldsmiths''
A Call for Writings (CfW)'
In 2012, we will mark 10 years of Writing Purposefully in Art and Design (Writing-PAD) and five years of the Journal of Writing in Creative Practice (JWCP) by dedicating the fifth volume to writing from Goldsmiths, University of London. This Volume - Writing Between the Disciplines: A celebration of writing at Goldsmiths – will be accompanied by an exhibition of visual works in 2013. This event will register our gratitude for the commitment and support that Goldsmiths has given the Writing-PAD Network over the last decade. This initiative will also raise consciousness about the diversity of writing styles within its departments.
Volume 5 will consist of three issues of JWCP to be published every four months throughout 2012. Approximately 10 articles of up to 5000 words or equivalent are required for each issue. Here are the 4 key stages with deadlines:
Invited Papers - Stage 1: Invited guests will send completed articles of up to 5000 words. Deadline: 7th October 2011.
We are looking for catalyst papers on, around or between the following themes: -
- Writing as/for/in art
- Writing as/for/in craft
- Writing as/for/in designing
- Writing as/for/in performance
- Writing, ethics and practice
These triggers will highlight the writings taking place in particular departments, instigate debates about writing and inspire collaborations across Goldsmiths. They will be published in JWCP 5:1 and will be integral to collaborative workshop events in 2012. We would hope to encourage collaborations from established and early career researchers.
Stage 2: A series of collaborative metadesign workshops across the disciplines run by students at Goldsmiths in which participants will be invited to design, test and evaluate tools and approaches to co-authorship.
Stage 3: Send articles of up to 5000 words or equivalent, which may be accompanied by visual images. Deadline: 2nd May 2012.
Stage 4: Send articles of up to 5000 words or equivalent, which may be accompanied by visual images. Deadline: 5th September 2012.
This call is open to Goldsmiths staff, students and alumni.
Background
Writing-PAD began in 2002 as the Writing PAD project (http://:www.writing-pad.ac.uk), with Goldsmiths, University of London as the lead institution of a consortium consisting of the Royal College of Art (RCA) and Central Saint Martin’s School of Art and Design (CSM). Funded for four years through HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England) FDTL (Funding for the Development of Teaching and Learning) Phase 4, the Writing-PAD project offered art and design institutions an arena in which to explore and develop the notion of thinking through writing as a parallel to visual discourse in art and design practice. We encouraged tutors from across the disciplines and roles: studio staff, theory staff, learning development, and learning and teaching (L&T) coordinators, to collaborate in order to better understand the writing needs of their students. This has proved inspirational to many across the sector, as this kind of forum for debate was unusual.
In 2006, we became the internationally recognized Writing-PAD Network (http://www.writing-pad.org/wiki) and five years ago, we founded the Journal of Writing in Creative Practice (JWCP) (http://www.intellectbooks.co.uk/journals/view-Journal,id=154/) as a showcase and discussion space for members of the growing network. JWCP is co-edited by Julia Lockheart (Senior Lecturer, CELAW) and John Wood (Emeritus Professor in Design at Goldsmiths).
Through her role as Writing-PAD Network director, Julia Lockheart has energetically maintained the international network through the Jiscmail (WRITING-PAD@JISCMAIL.AC.UK), Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Writing-PAD/219826771252?ref=ts), Twitter presence (http://twitter.com/#!/WritingPAD), and run the main Writing-PAD Centre from CELAW. There are now eleven institutions across the world hosting Writing-PAD Centres. Many of them have already guest edited the JWCP to highlight their own writings. As such, Writing Between the Disciplines: A celebration of writing at Goldsmiths, is intended to bring together writing between departments, staff and students across Goldsmiths, but also to promote the uniqueness of writing at Goldsmiths to the international Writing-PAD Network.
This call is open to Goldsmiths staff, students and alumni.
