The Writing-PAD Network
Writing-PAD stands for Writing Purposefully in Art and DesignNews:
2012 brings a celebration of 10 years of Writing-PAD and 5 years since the foundation of the network and of the Journal of Writing in Creative Practice. There will be pop-up events happening across the network. If you would like to run an event or get involved in something happening in your institution, please contact your Writing-PAD representative (see Writing-PAD Centres at the bottom of this page). We are always keen to consider the outputs of these events for the Journal of Writing in Creative Practice (JWCP).POP-UPS:
September, 2012 University of Plymouth will host a two-day Writing-PAD event for the South West. Contact:On Friday 30th March, 2012 Writing-PAD will hold its first collaborative set of workshops with the Arnolfini
Thursday 29th March, 2012 saw Staffordshire University host the first workshop in the Writing in Creative Practice series, run in conjunction with Writing-PAD and funded by the Higher Education Academy. Titled 'Thinking Through Writing and Making', this workshop looked at how academic practice that seems to be hidden to students’ understanding of the term ‘research’ can be highlighted through a variety of learning and teaching activities. The author of 'Inspiring Writing in Art and Design: Taking a Line for a Write', Pat Francis, will lead part of the day in which exploratory writing will be tried, as well as collage and other making activities in order to visualise research activities such as questioning the provenance of a text. Conceived as a hands-on day with lots of activities and discussion, Sarah Williamson will introduce us to the making of individual artists’ books in order to capture the impressions of individual participants in a creative and visual way – and let them experience the suggested strategies rather than just hearing about them.
Pictures of works in progress and other participant reactions to the theme will be submitted as a photo essay to the 'Journal of Writing in Creative Practice'text. For more information, please get in touch with Dr Alke Gröppel-Wegener (a.c.groppel-wegener@staffs.ac.uk).
Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th November 2011 saw Writing-PAD in association with Manchester Metropolitan University host the Illustration and Writing Symposium. Selected papers have been published in JWCP 4:3. For details please contact Desdemona McCannon:
Friday 1st April 2011 saw the Writing PAD Wales Centre at Swansea Metropolitan University run its first collaborative writing symposium. See Writing PAD Centre Wales for details.
Feedback: "I thoroughly enjoyed the day, which was well run and invigorating. I came away having heard so many good ideas, which I am keen to disseminate in my own institution."
Papers presented on the day and collaborations inspired will be published in the forthcoming Journal Writing Creative Practice 4:2.
- Writing-PAD was launched in 2002 at Goldsmiths, University of London, where it continues to be managed by Julia Lockheart
- It offers its member institutions a creative playground in which to reflect upon ‘thinking through writing’.
- We see these types of writing as an under-explored parallel to the visual discourse in art and design practices.
- Writing-PAD brings together academics from across the disciplines, and from across the roles:
- i.e. studio staff
- theory staff
- learning support staff
- learning and teaching (L&T) coordinators
How do we work together?
We have several ways for you to contribute to Writing PAD:
Social Networking
Tweet to us and with us @WritingPAD
'Like' our Facebook page Writing-PAD
The Writing PAD Wiki
Launched in April 2009, Writing PAD's Network Wiki is to encourage co-writing and co-authorship. It is our vision that as many people as possible can contribute their ideas to this site.
The Journal of Writing in Creative Practice
You can submit papers to the Journal Writing Creative Practice. However, we are not currently accepting open submissions because for the past 3 issues the journal has been guest edited by specialists from our Writing-PAD Centres. This will continue for the next two volumes. This is to give our centres a chance to showcase writing taking place in or around their geographical areas or subject specific interests.
The Writing PAD Glossary
You can contribute by submitting your own words along with their definitions to the Writing PAD Glossary.
Short papers for web publishing
We would like to hear how your institution has been influenced or changed by the Writing PAD debates.
We are looking for some new short discussion papers to launch on the new wiki to continue the debate that started way back in 2002.
Writing PAD Centres
We now have eight official Writing PAD Centres. Each of these Centres will be hosting a Writing PAD event which will be followed by their own themed issue(s) of the Journal of Writing in Creative Practice.
